Note from the President

President of NAWBO SFBA, Kathleen Thurmond Kathleen Thurmond

Kathleen Thurmond president@nawbo-sfba.org

First of all, thank you to those of you who attended the January dinner and participated in our dinner survey. We strive to bring speakers who bring value both professionally and personally. You ideas and input are invaluable. We appreciate the time you took to keep us informed and to provide us with innovative ideas for future meetings. We have learned so much from your participation in the survey and will send a survey after each dinner meeting.

Secondly, I wanted to reiterate what I spoke about at our January meeting. Given all the changes and uncertainty erupting in the world right now, we have known as a board and an organization that we need to make changes that accurately reflect what you, our members need. NAWBO was created in an era when women in business and women entrepreneurs were new and there wasn't a lot of information out there. Now, we are inundated with tools and information about being a woman business owner. Individuals and organizations need to be part of the business world as it is now. A new evolution needs to be embraced and a new way of conducting business is yet to be discovered. NAWBO as an organization has been around for about 40 years. It has provided a wonderful foundation from which to launch into a new, ever shifting world in business and in our personal lives. As Ghandi said, "be the change you want to see in the world."

I invite you to participate with NAWBO, in partnership, to help create an organization that will provide exactly what you need to expand your business through connection, education, networking and public policy. Join us for our February 9th meeting at our new dinner location at the Galleria Park, to hear Karen Leland speak about her "Marketing Pyramid" and to connect with other women in their mutual quest to lift one another up and expand their knowledge in business. Don't forget about our special meeting presented by the America's Cup organization from 4:30 to 5:30 prior to the meeting. Attend and learn about how you can do business with America's Cup.

Mayor Lee Announces Initiative to Boost Small Business & Create Jobs

Mayor Edwin M. Lee recently announced that he will make $1.5 million dollars immediately available to small businesses in San Francisco through the City’s successful Small Business Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to support business expansion and job creation.

The Mayor’s $1 million budget supplemental leverages Wells Fargo’s contribution of $430,000 to the RLF combined with an additional $247,000 from small business loan repayments and the SOMA Stabilization Fund. Wells Fargo funding will be specifically targeted to businesses in low- and moderate-income commercial districts in the Southeast Sector of the City.

Mayor Lee made the announcement at Brenda’s French Soul Food at 652 Polk Street. Brenda’s is a recipient of a Working Solutions small business loan, and benefited from the City’s SF Shines Facade Improvement Program, which provides small grants to businesses in a number of low- and moderate-income neighborhood commercial districts. With funding from Opportunity Fund and Wells Fargo, Brenda’s opened on Polk Street in August 2007. Her business was an instant success, often bursting at the seams with people waiting for a table. With financial assistance from the Revolving Loan Fund and assistance from the Office of Small Business, Brenda’s expanded to the vacant Laundromat next door, doubling the space and capacity of the business in 2011. The Office of Small Business worked with Brenda's to apply for financing and secure the necessary permits and licenses.

The City’s Revolving Loan Fund, managed by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and administered by TMC Working Solution, was launched in July of 2009 with the intention of creating jobs and increasing access to capital. To date, OEWD and TMC have successfully administered the entire $670,000 loan fund, and have supported 27 San Francisco small businesses and have generated 73 jobs. Click here for more information on the RLF.

Business Opportunities with the America's Cup

San Francisco will be home to the 34th America's Cup. Over 160 years old, the America's Cup has evolved into one of the world's leading sports competitions featuring the best sailors on the world's fastest boats, the wing-sailed AC72 catamaran. The 34th America's Cup represents a unique opportunity to create employment and economic development opportunities for San Franciscans and local businesses, which we are excited to share with our members.

On Thursday, February 9th, representatives from the mayor's office presented to a packed room of NAWBO members and guests about their commitment to support local businesses, like yours. For instance, the America's Cup event organizers have created a business portal - the America's Cup Business Connect (www.americascup.com/connect<http://www.americascup.com/connect>) - which will highlight local businesses and their offerings for those seeking services, as well as serve as the one-stop shop for the America's Cup Event Authority to announce business and contracting opportunities. Since the America's Cup organizers have mandated that they will use at least 30% to support San Francisco local businesses, NAWBO members are encouraged to register their business and submit an application to be listed in this marketplace. All types of businesses are encouraged to apply: hospitality, media, technology, professional services, construction, etc.

Time Varying Pricing May Effect Your Company Nov. 1st!

Time Varying Pricing is a new program effective November 1st from California Public Utilities Commission and PG&E.

To efficiently manage the impacts of heightened demand for electricity, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has mandated that all Investor Owned Utilities pursue Time-Varying Pricing as a way to support the state's energy and greenhouse gas reduction requirements. This mandate transitions all business customers in the state from flat pricing plans to Time-Varying Pricing plans that align customers' price of energy with the cost of energy at the time it is used.

Public Policy

Public Policy Activity & Resources

NAWBO National takes strategic stands on the latest legislative issues affecting women business owners. The Legislative Action Center puts bold action at the fingertips of each NAWBO member, delivering the latest policy briefs into your inbox and providing meaningful contact with elected officials with just one click.

NAWBO California actively supports our political process and the government which it serves. As a business owner, it is in your best interest to know who your State representatives are, the positions they hold, and how each individual person represents your interests. Use this list of resources to contact your government representatives.

Public Policy is important to every business owner. Barbara Kasoff, President and CEO, and Co-Founder of Women Impacting Public Policy, Inc.,spoke at the NAWBO SFBS Mixer May 12th and inspired all of us to be informed and maybe get involved in public policy.

WIPP is a non-profit, nonpartisan public policy advocacy organization with over half a million members including 54 business organizations, educating and advocating on economic issues for women in business.

WIPP Calls on Women to Run for Office- Don't Get Mad. Get Elected!

Did you know that women hold just 17% of the seats in Congress and only 23% of state legislatures, where critical, life-altering decisions are often made? Yet women are 51% of the population -- and are leaders in their fields and in community, professional, and civic organizations like WIPP.

A once-in-a-decade opportunity is before us: open congressional and state legislative seats redrawn after redistricting and reapportionment are up for grabs in the 2012 election. Women win open seats as often as men do; there just aren't enough women running. You have a track record of success, you know how to solve problems, you care about your community, and you have the skills and expertise to make a difference. Why not you?

WIPP's leaders and The 2012 Project are asking: Will you run for public office? The 2012 Project is a national, nonpartisan campaign seeking accomplished women in the private and public sectors to fill the new and open seats in Congress and state legislatures in the next election.

The 2012 Project will connect you with campaign training programs, leadership institutes, think tanks, and fundraising networks that will help you launch a successful campaign. Want to know more?

Visit The 2012 Project website at www.the2012project.us. Ready to get involved? Contact us at info@the2012project.us or (650) 326-2216.
